Keep it simple stupid

by Vlad on 14/07/2008

So Eric and I are considering the start of Duo LLC, our way of making some extra cash and eventually freeing ourselves from the companies we work at. I really want to model our company like 37signals. More importantly, I read their manifesto and now want to create one for Duo as a list of guidelines to keep our business a happy place. I can safely say that I’m becoming obsessed with simplicity and design. Like 37signals, I want to provide a service to people that they really need, in the simplest and most cost-efficient way. I enjoy making people happy, and I think our company will be able to do that cheaper than the competition. As Duo, we simply want to help people for a simple price, and however far this goes, I want to keep it that way.

The key in todays business IT is making Complex tasks and systems looking simple and usable… at least in my mind. I’m impressed by 37signals manifesto; and hearing more of your ideas.

That’s right Larry, business and IT need to be working together to make things simple, but IT people are so socially awkward and know very little about business. So what you get is bloated and complicated pricing schemes and retarded bureaucracies… 37signals really hits the nail on the head when it comes to having a small company that just works.

I like to reference this quote when thinking of this situation of Business and IT, one of my professors did a very interesting lecture on relating mathmatics and politics; but the quote he based it on is as followed.

“All things human are either Mathematical or Political. Hence, Hold your enemies close. Their politics will affect your math” ~ JB Say

I personally find this quote interesting because it can be interperated in many ways in relation to business and life.
